August 2008 Fishing Report

Let me take a moment to welcome everyone to the 2008 fishing season here at 3 Creek Ranch. The start of the 3 Creek fishing season was June 1st. Normally the early season fishing is good but not great and this year was no exception. Generally the first “wave” of fish returning from the Snake begins sometime in April and the second, much bigger “wave” happens in mid-June. When the 2008 season started, there were a few fish around and for the first couple of weeks we had a mix of everything from slow to good fishing. The combination of low water, inconsistent hatches and late arrival of most of our fish made the catching part of the early season somewhat of a challenge. I began to notice more fish in the creeks beginning June 18th. This, along with more consistent hatches and higher water flows, made a big difference in making catches easier the last 10 days of the month. Generally, July offers the best fishing of the season here on the Ranch. Expect good hatches of PMDs and, when conditions are right, both Green and Grey Drakes. Fish will also key in on ants and beetles and they may start looking for hoppers towards the end of July. The last major piece of stream restoration was completed this past off-season on lower Spring Creek and maintenance was also completed on upper Cody Creek. I am already seeing fish in many of the new pieces of holding water we created. In addition, summer months are also great on the South Fork and Snake, so make it a point to get out and do some fishing.

Enjoy the summer.
