July 2009 Fishing Report
Greetings from Jim and John down at the Nature Center! The fishing season is now in full swing as we approach some of the best fishing of the year. As you may have heard, the season got off to a slow start thanks to three solid weeks of rain and cooler temperatures. This precipitation, along with the ranchers irrigating their fields, created the highest water levels we have seen in our creeks for some time now. However, we believe that more water in the creeks is a good thing, as it ensures prime water levels and temperatures for the rest of the season. With that said, the creeks have been starting to return to normal flows, and the fishing is picking up daily.
The upper and lower beats on Spring Creek have been fishing well, especially in the afternoon. We have seen good hatches of PMD and Beatis mayflies, as well as the occasional Green Drake mayfly. We look for the Green Drakes to really start popping soon, which is always an exciting time to be on the water. Cody Creek is still a little high and off color. We are walking it every day to observe the action and currently we are classifying it under the "any day now" status. Blue Crane Creek has fished well, however, there are only a few fish in the creek. We are seeing fish moving up the creek daily, so it should be in full swing very soon. Most of the action is in the afternoon, and there are large PMD and small Beatis mayflies coming off. We hope all three creeks will be fishing well in the next week or so.
