November 2008 Fishing Report

Hi from Jim Brungardt Fishing Coordinator here at 3 Creek Ranch. The 2008 fishing season is just about over and already I'm looking forward to 2009. But for now let's look back at the highlights for 2008. In general I was very happy with the fishing this past season. Due to the big snowpack this past winter we had plenty of water in all three creeks all summer long. The PMDs started to hatch in mid-June and continued thru the end of July. I thought this year's hatch was about average but still plenty good enough to bring big fish to the surface on a regular basis. The Green Drakes showed up around June 25th and continued to hatch into early July. Although duration was about normal the number of bugs hatching each day seemed higher than normal. Some of the very best fishing of the season was during this time period. When those big mayflies would pile off, it brought every fish in the creeks to the surface...as some of you know the fishing was flat out awesome. Sulphurs started hatching in early August and we continued to see the occasional one right thru October. These small mayflies can be difficult to match but often offer hours of technical dry fly fishing. The fall Baetis and Mahogany Dun hatches were below average. This was a HUGE hopper year and when the fish were on hoppers the fishing was fast and easy. So overall a very good year and much better than the low-water year of 2007. I am already looking forward to the 2009 season. The work we did on lower Spring before the 2008 season paid immediate dividends and I expect this fishery to continue to improve for the next several years. I want to thank all of you that fished with me this past summer. I truly enjoyed every day on the water. I look forward to getting back on the water with you again and encourage those homeowners that didn't fish this past year to give it a try in 2009. I'll see you in 2009!
